Most homeowners don’t realize that at some point they will have to replace their garage door. There are numerous factors that lead to the wear and tear of your garage door, however, most garage doors will last from 15 to 20 years (a steel door). A garage door is a large and complex system of pulleys, springs, and rollers which require maintenance over the years. There are a few preventative maintenance steps that you can do to make sure you get good life from your door.
- Use a silicone spray to keep moving parts lubricated. Unlike WD-40, a silicone spray has rust destroying and degreasing aspect that is great to keep the spring, rollers, and hinges properly lubricated. For best results, you can apply the spray two times a year.
- Keep your garage door clean. Washing your garage door regularly is an easy way to keep running smoothly for a longer period. To clean it you can use some detergent mixed with water on all the moving parts.
- Have your garage door regularly inspected. Your garage door should be constantly checked for malfunctioning parts that might affect the rest of the door. Make sure to inspect your door at least once a year for loose bolts, rust, frayed wires or abnormal noises.
